Mental Health is Key to Sustainable Development: It Starts with Quality Education

On Mental Health Awareness month, the Executive Director of the UN’s global fund for education in emergencies, Education Cannot Wait, calls for expanded support for crisis-impacted children worldwide.

Millions of children and adolescents witness family members attacked and killed. They see their homes burnt to the ground. They flee through the night in search of safety. They live in constant fear and violence. The abnormal has become “normal” in their life. Indeed, this is the reality facing many of the 222 million children and adolescents worldwide whose lives and mental well-being are affected, as a result of brutal conflicts and forced displacement, all while their education is disrupted.

As a result of the brutal internal armed conflict in Sudan right now, UNHCR projects that 860,000 people will flee across the borders as refugees and returnees into the Central African Republic, Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia, Eritrea and South Sudan. About 50% will be children and adolescents below 18.

BUDGET: Measures to tackle disadvantage welcome, but more targeted support for children needed

Save the Children welcomes the 2023-24 Federal Budget measures to tackle entrenched disadvantage and support Australian families struggling with cost-of-living pressures, but is concerned that targeted support for children to recover from years of compounding crises was notably absent.

The charity is particularly supportive of $199.8 million in funding to address entrenched community disadvantage by promoting philanthropy and social impact investment, in line with Save the Children’s own approach to tackling urgent problems facing children through its Impact Investment Fund.

“¡Bienvenidos!” UNICEF facilitators call out as refugee and migrant parents from Venezuela enter the bright yellow and blue Points of Information and Orientation (PIO) center in Cúcuta, Colombia, with their young children.

It’s a joyous space, filled with art, music, laughter and hope. Some mothers hold their young children to their chests as they bounce up and down to the beat of the music, while other girls and boys dance and clap on their own.

I was a child during the Iraq war. Now I’m a doctor urging the world to protect education during emergencies

I was 9 years old when Iraq was invaded by the US and its allies.

I remember grey airplanes piercing through the sky. And once they’d landed, the massive metal tanks crawling from the planes and driving through residential streets. As the bombing and looting began, our schools were closed indefinitely and our learning halted. Many schools were destroyed during the war, and the remaining schools had to cater for an exponentially larger number of students.
