Story How an expert is gathering data through crises to improve learning outcomes in South Sudan

In South Sudan, a nation ravaged by civil war, food insecurity, and natural disasters, millions of people have been displaced, creating significant educational barriers for children and youth. With approximately 2.2 million children out of school, many face additional challenges, such as lack of access to healthcare and psychological trauma, making the pursuit of education an uphill battle.  

Amid these circumstances, Giir Mabior, the Director for Data and Statistics in the Ministry of General Education and Instruction (MoGEI), and his team are working tirelessly to ensure that the most vulnerable children have access to quality education in South Sudan. His mission is gathering crucial data needed to transform educational outcomes for these young lives. To do this, he and his colleagues must overcome extraordinary challenges to reach schools and teachers.

ESCUELAS SEGURAS EN COLOMBIA

Ante el recrudecimiento de acciones violentas y armadas en el país en las que se han visto afectadas las escuelas y centros educativos poniendo en riesgo a niñas, niños y adolescentes, el Consejo Noruego para Refugiados, Fundación Plan, Save the Children, Unicef y World Vision, con el apoyo del fondo Education Cannot Wait (la Educación No Puede Esperar) promueven esfuerzos conjuntos para tener entornos y escuelas más seguras, que permitan garantizar el derecho a la educación de la niñez colombiana.

Según el Observatorio de Niñez y Conflicto Armado (ONCA), el 60 % de los eventos armados registrados el año pasado afectaron directamente a 268.524 niños, niñas y adolescentes, un 11,5 % más que en el 2021.

The effects of the armed conflict on the education of minors in the country

Catalina Duarte Salcedo, coordinator of the 'Education cannot wait' program, spoke about the serious effects that the conflict has on children who are in the process of training.

Children in Colombia are victims of multiple forms of abuse: forced recruitment, sexual abuse, poor nutrition. Many of them are related to the armed conflict that continues to affect various regions of the country.

As a consequence of these facts, the education of children is put at risk. Schools that must close or children who do not have the opportunity to reach them . It is estimated that between January and September 2022, more than 12,000 children had to temporarily or indefinitely suspend their studies due to events related to the armed conflict, according to data from the Observatory for Children and Armed Conflict (ONCA).

Los niños en Colombia son víctimas de múltiples formas de maltrato: el reclutamiento forzado, el abuso sexual, la mala nutrición. Muchas de ellas tienen relación con el conflicto armado que sigue afectando a varias regiones del país.

Como consecuencia de estos hechos, la educación de los niños se pone en riesgo. Escuelas que deben cerrar o niños que no tienen la oportunidad de llegar a ellas. Se calcula que entre enero y septiembre de 2022, más de 12 mil niños tuvieron que suspender temporal o indefinidamente sus estudios por hechos vinculados con el conflicto armado, de acuerdo con los datos del Observatorio de Niñez y Conflicto Armado (Onca).

"Education Cannot Wait" (L'éducation ne peut pas attendre) est le fonds mondial des Nations unies pour l'éducation dans les situations d'urgence et les crises prolongées. Ce fonds soutient une éducation de qualité pour les garçons réfugiés, déplacés à l'intérieur de leur pays ou affectés par d'autres crises, afin que personne ne soit laissé pour compte.

Folly Bah Thibault, a native of Guinea and a star journalist for Al Jazeera TV, launched her foundation "Elle ira à l'Ecole", Fondation Kesso Bah" in 2019 to help young girls in Guinea gain access to quality education.

"Education Cannot Wait" is the UN's global fund for education in emergencies and protracted crises. The fund supports quality education for girls and boys who are refugees, internally displaced or affected by other crises, so that no one is left behind.
