Our Key Results

Education Cannot Wait reaffirmed itself as the global fund for education in emergencies and protracted crisis in 2019, building a global movement with strategic partners to provide children and youth caught in armed conflicts, forced displacement, climate change-induced disasters and protracted crises with the safety, hope and opportunity of an education.

Working with our broad range of partners, ECW had active grants in 29 crisis-affected countries in 2019. This report captures the results delivered through these investments to support inclusive and equitable quality education for the millions of girls and boys caught in humanitarian crises.

Global humanitarian aid to education is on the rise and grew fivefold from 2015 to 2019, reaching a record amount of more than $700 million in 2019.

Delivering across the humanitarian-development nexus. In 2019, six new Multi-Year Resilience Programmes (MYRPs) were developed in Chad, Ethiopia, Palestine, Somalia, Syria and South Sudan with national authorities and in-country partners, increasing the number of active MYRPs to 10.

We are responding with decisive speed and agility to unique, fast-acting global crises. Including Cyclone Idai and Cyclone Kenneth, which hit Southern Africa in 2019 – and the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

A rights-based approach. Human rights, international humanitarian law and international refugee law underpin our rights-based approach.

Committed to inclusion and equality. Close to half of our beneficiaries in 2019 were girls. We also focus on other marginalized children in crises such as refugees, displaced children and children with disabilities.

‘Whole-of-child’ approaches deliver comprehensive solutions. In 2019, ECW actively promoted a ‘whole-of-child approach’ in which interventions address a variety of learning, teaching, organizational and safety needs.

Delivering quality education and improving learning outcomes. ECW interventions respond to the fact that conflict-affected children and youth often do not have previous schooling experience, nor do they have the mental or academic readiness for learning.
