NEW YORK, May 17 2023 - At this year’s G7 Hiroshima Summit in Japan, world leaders will have a chance to “uphold the international order based on the rule of law and extend outreach to the Global South.” Education, as a binding force that unites us all in our global efforts to protect human rights and ensure sustainable development, should be front and centre on the G7 Agenda.

Through the ground-breaking leadership of Japan, the G7 Summit promises to address a number of interconnected global crises – including nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, economic resilience and security, climate and energy, food, health and development. By investing in education in emergencies and protracted crises through multilateral organizations such as Education Cannot Wait – the UN global fund for education in emergencies and protracted crises – the G7 has an opportunity to make targeted and responsive investments to these interconnected crises.

ECW just announced a $3 million grant for Chad to help provide access to safe and protective learning environments for incoming refugee girls and boys fleeing the conflict in Sudan, and support the host communities. The new grant brings ECW’s total investments to support vulnerable children’s education in Chad to over US$41 million.

Rolando Gómez, Chief of the Press and External Relations Section at the United Nations Information Service in Geneva, chaired the hybrid briefing Opens in new window, which was attended by representatives and spokespersons of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, World Health Organization, the World Meteorological Organization, the United Nations Refugee Agency, the International Telecommunication Union, Education Cannot Wait, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

Fighting between Sudanese army and paramilitary rapid support forces has entered second month. The fighting is forcing tens of thousands of people to leave their homes in search for safety. 

The UN and humanitarian partners continue to scale up the aid response for the millions in need across Sudan on Tuesday, as news reports described heavy fighting in the capital Khartoum and neighbouring areas between the national army and rival RSF militia

Tras la misión sobre el terreno de alto nivel de Education Cannot Wait (ECW) con ACNUR a las regiones fronterizas de Chad con Sudán, donde han llegado recientemente 60.000 refugiados, la directora ejecutiva de ECW, Yasmine Sherif, anunció una subvención de 3 millones de dólares para la Primera Respuesta de Emergencia.

La financiación proporcionará acceso a entornos de aprendizaje seguros y protectores a las niñas y niños refugiados que llegan al país y apoyará a las comunidades de acogida. Con esta nueva subvención, las inversiones totales de ECW en Chad superan los 41 millones de dólares.
