“Venezuela’s ongoing regional crisis is such that more than 6.1 million refugees and migrants have fled the country, triggering the second largest refugee crisis today. Colombia alone is host to 2.5 million Venezuelan refugees and migrants in need of international protection,” Yasmine Sherif, Executive Director of Education Cannot Wait (ECW), tells IPS.

A pesar de los esfuerzos del Gobierno de Colombia para extender el estatus de protección temporal a personas venezolanas en Colombia, los niños y niñas continúan sin realizar su derecho humano a una educación de calidad. En 2021, la tasa de deserción fue de 3,62 % (3,2 % para niñas y 4,2 % para niños). La cifra casi se duplica para personas venezolanas al 6,4 % y alcanza el 17 % para los niños y niñas que padecen de desplazamientos internos.
