Amid the escalating impacts of climate change worldwide, robust data systems for education are critical to better understanding how learners are affected by climate change. Almost one billion children live in high-risk countries, susceptible to the impacts of climate change, including droughts, floods, and cyclones.

Ensuring quality education in crisis-affected settings is also essential for achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4). However, many governments and partners lack disaggregated, reliable, and up-to-date data for effective preparedness, response, and recovery planning. This can hinder the development of strategic plans and programmes and hamper coordination among the many involved stakeholders.   

On the sixth United Nations International Day of Education, the charity Education Cannot Wait called on world leaders to “end wars and armed conflicts and focus on our common humanity to embrace the vast potential that learning offers in uniting our world.”

The charity said the world is being torn apart by injustice, oppression, racism, xenophobia, fear, greed and violent means of conflict resolution. In Gaza, no child — among over 600,000 girls and boys — has access to education. In Afghanistan, 2.5 million school-aged girls and women — around 80 per cent — are out of school because of their sex, systematically denied their human right to an education.

ECW said: “Around 224 million children, impacted by the compounding forces of armed conflicts, climate change and forced displacement, are in dire, urgent need of quality education. Instead of investing in more wars, leading to more human suffering, injustices and extreme poverty, let us heed the words of Nelson Mandela: ‘Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world’.”

En la última Conferencia de las Partes (COP28), la reunión oficial de las Partes en la Convención Marco de las Naciones Unidas sobre el Cambio Climático, se destacó  el valor primordial que tiene la educación para el manejo de la crisis climática. 

Yasmine Sherif, directora ejecutiva de la Fundación «La educación no puede esperar», bregó que se debe situar a la educación en el centro de la agenda de la acción climática, y que además la «inversión en educación puede ayudar mucho a garantizar que las nuevas generaciones sigan yendo a la escuela y se conviertan en los ingenieros, los científicos y los profesores que seguirán labrando el camino para salvar la madre tierra».

De son côté, Yasmine Sherif, la Directrice général d’« Education sans délai », le Fonds mondial des Nations Unies pour l'éducation en situation d'urgence et de crise prolongée, a souligné, à l’occasion de cette Journée, l’importance de l’éducation en tant que condition de réalisation de la paix, de sociétés fortes et d’un monde meilleur. 

Mme Sherif dresse cependant un constat amer sur un monde « déchiré par l’injustice, l’oppression, le racisme, la xénophobie, la peur, l’avidité et les conflits violents » dont les enfants d’âge scolaire en sont les premières victimes.

Det sker sideløbende med vores engagement i Global Partnership for Education og Education Cannot Wait for at sikre adgang til kvalitetsuddannelse for børn og unge, der er tvunget på flugt. 

Et eksempel på dette er et nyt samarbejde mellem Udenrigsministeriet og LEGO Fonden om et uddannelsesinitiativ baseret på leg, der støtter inklusionen af flygtningebørn og lokalsamfund i det nationale uddannelsessystem i Kenya. 

La Campaña Educación sin Límites: Aprendo aquí o allá es una iniciativa del Grupo Regional de Educación para América Latina y el Caribe (GRE-LAC) en el marco del componente Regional del Programa Multi-Anual de Resiliencia (MYRP, por sus siglas en inglés) con fondos de “Education Cannot Wait” (ECW) y el Gobierno de Canadá desde el liderazgo de Save the Children, con el objetivo de visibilizar la crisis educativa que viven los niños, niñas y adolescentes en situación de movilidad, además de promover su acceso y permanencia en los servicios educativos, y dar a conocer el impacto positivo que aporta a una comunidad de acogida que la niñez y adolescencia en situación de movilidad humana tenga acceso a este derecho.

United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) with funding from partnership for learning for all in Nigeria project of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and Education Cannot Wait, has provided various learning skills to 285,000 beneficiaries in Borno and Yobe states, respectively.

The beneficiaries comprised 270,500 children aged six to 17 years ( 45 percent boys and 55 percent girls) ; 7200 educators and facilitators, 1,035 government officials and 2,235 school and centre-based management committee members.

“In collaboration with the Government humanitarian partners and donors such as Education Cannot Wait. We have made huge strides in the provision of quality, inclusive education for children affected by conflict.

“More girls and children living with disabilities are enrolling in school through regular enrollment campaigns and the provision of a conducive learning environment with sanitation facilities across the northeast region.” Phuong disclosed.

She charged stakeholders to redouble their efforts with innovative solutions even as the context of the operating environment is changing, assuring that UNICEF will continue to work with the Government, donors and other partners to raise the bar of education for girls and boys affected by conflict and give them a future.

“Every International Day of Education affords us the opportunity to look at how far we have come, we cannot lose sight of the huge gaps that still exist in reaching the most disadvantaged children in rural communities with quality and inclusive education,” she said.

She lamented that more than half of all displaced children in the northeast of Nigeria are out of school while less than 40percent of primary and secondary schools in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states (BAY) have teachers with low level of teaching qualifications resulting in ineffective learning of children at the foundation level.

"Sara Saldarriaga, Líder de Educación en World Vision, destaca: "Regresar a clases no es algo fácil de asegurar para todos los niños y niñas. Este debería ser un pleno ejercicio del derecho a la educación, y en esto influyen diferentes aspectos que hay que considerar como son las condiciones socioeconómicas de las familias, sus intenciones de buscar oportunidades en otros lugares o el costo que les implica cuando tienen varios hijos/as en edad escolar."

Para abordar estos desafíos, World Vision implementó durante tres años el proyecto "La Educación No Puede Esperar", financiado por el fondo de Emergencias para la Educación, Education Can not Wait y la Embajada de Canadá. Este proyecto se centró en mejorar el acceso a una educación de calidad, protectora y equitativa para la niñez y adolescencia migrante y refugiada que no asiste a la escuela por diversas razones, beneficiando a un promedio de 39.000 personas, incluyendo a la niñez y sus familias.

У Міносвіти повідомили про перші домовленості - понад 50 тис. пристроїв, які передають у рамках "Коаліції девайсів" від Дитячого фонду ООН (ЮНІСЕФ), Education Cannot Wait, Міністерства економіки та інновацій Литви та Японського агентства міжнародного співробітництва (JICA).

"Мета коаліції цьогоріч - закрити критичну потребу в девайсах для дітей і вчителів із 10 областей, у яких переважає дистанційне навчання. Зараз критична потреба ноутбуків становить понад 96 тисяч пристроїв для дітей і понад 29 тисяч для вчителів", - ідеться в повідомленні.
