The UN global fund for education in emergencies and protracted crises, Education Cannot Wait (ECW), outlines that of those 222 million girls and boys, as many as 78.2 million are out of school, and close to 120 million who are in attendance are not achieving minimum proficiency in math or reading.

As world leaders decide how to allocate resources in response to COVID-19, climate change, and conflict, they must make spending on education a much higher priority. This means rethinking international development policy with a view to achieving a world in which respect for equality and human rights starts with education for all.

At the end of June, education and finance leaders will come together to discuss their priorities for the upcoming Transforming Education Summit. This Summit in September offers an important opportunity for Member States to accelerate progress towards SDG4. It aims to mobilise greater public and political commitments to transform education so that, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic — alongside growing inequality, conflict, and impact of climate change — no child loses out on their right to education and the life-changing potential it offers.

Funding for education in emergencies (EiE) is falling behind. It is far from meeting the needs of the millions of school-aged children and youth affected globally by crises, who require educational support. This is the conclusion of a new report released today by the Geneva Global Hub for EiE at an event hosted by the Permanent Missions of Switzerland and Niger to the UN in Geneva.
