Healing and Recovery Through Education in Emergencies

Advocacy Brief/Factsheet

This document emphasizes the need for Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) for children and adolescents in emergencies and protracted crises so that they can access opportunities for healing, recovery and learning in safe, nurturing education environments. Without addressing "toxic stress," children can suffer lifelong affects that impact their ability to learn, grow and develop. This brief lays out the many reasons why MHPSS is essential, how Education Cannot Wait (ECW) is implementing MHPSS and an example of its success in supporting children in Iraq. The brief was jointly published by ECW and the Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Collaborative (MHPSS Collaborative).
