The European Union and ‘Education Cannot Wait' both promote access to high-quality education for the children most left behind, and seek to make education investments more effective and sustainable by bridging the gap between humanitarian and development interventions, in line with the commitments of the Transforming Education Summit.

The first action leaders can take is investing in Education Cannot Wait (ECW), who are hosting a financing conference in Switzerland in just a few days’ time. Since 2016, ECW has transformed the delivery of education in emergencies and pursued the humanitarian-development nexus – practicing a context-driven approach, while maintaining focus on a long-term goal. They now require at least $1.5 billion to deliver an ambitious 2023 – 2026 strategic plan and reach 20 million crisis-affected children and young people with a quality education. It is within our power as a global community to invest more and invest more effectively, but we must act now.

Providing all children in crisis with the educational opportunities they deserve is among the defining challenges of our time. Ensuring that children fleeing from conflict can still learn will contribute to a more peaceful, resilient world and help close the yawning gap between talent and opportunity. 

Yasmine Sherif, Director, Education Cannot Wait (ECW), announced that this week in Geneva on 16 and 17 February, ECW was hosting a high-level financing conference, co-hosted by the Government of Switzerland and co-convened by the governments of Colombia, Germany, Niger, Norway, and South Sudan.

La coalición española de la Campaña Mundial por la Educación (CME) ja pedido al gobierno español que aumente su compromiso político e incremente la financiación para educación en emergencias con motivo de la celebración de la conferencia de donantes de Education Cannot Wait. La cumbre, que tiene lugar entre el 16 y 17 de febrero en Ginebra, intenta servir a este fondo de las Naciones Unidas sobre educación en contextos de crisis para recaudar al menos 1.500 millones de dólares.

To that end, we also will need to mobilize sufficient financing for vehicles like Education Cannot Wait, the UN’s global fund designed specifically to address the link between climate change, forced displacement, and education. ECW has successfully rolled out education programs in dozens of crisis-affected countries in recent years, and it remains fully committed to addressing “the obstacles that have prevented humanitarian and development actors from delivering quality education in humanitarian crises.”

Al termine dell’IC Forum, il 16 e 17 febbraio 2023 si svolgerà la prima conferenza di alto livello per il finanziamento del fondo Education Cannot Wait (Education Cannot Wait High Level Financing Conference, ECW). 

To meet the urgent needs of children in affected areas in Syria, $3.75 million in GPE funds are immediately available to partners to set up temporary learning spaces, clean and repair damaged schools, deliver school meals and provide psychosocial support. These funds will work alongside the important $7 million announced today by Education Cannot Wait.
